Editor In Chief

Gilbert Da Costa is a seasoned journalist and lawyer with decades of experience as a reporter, editor, and bureau chief for some of the world’s leading news organizations. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief at Offshore Africa, a pan-African publication specializing in the energy and mining sectors.

Previously, Da Costa served as CNN’s Nigeria correspondent during one of the country’s most turbulent periods—the era of military rule and prolonged political crises. From 1993 to 2000, he provided extensive coverage of Nigeria’s ruthless military dictators, including breaking the news of the sudden death of General Sani Abacha and opposition leader Moshood Abiola in 1998.

His primary employer in Nigeria was the Associated Press (AP), one of the world’s largest news agencies. Joining AP in 1993, he rose to lead its reporting team in Nigeria until his departure in 2004. Over the years, he also contributed to TIME Magazine, BBC, and Voice of America (VOA). Notably, in February 2005, he became the first foreign journalist to travel to Nigeria’s northeast to cover the rise of Boko Haram, providing firsthand reporting on the brewing insurgency.

Beyond political and conflict reporting, Da Costa has covered Africa’s oil and gas industry for over 30 years, establishing himself as a key voice in the sector. He has received numerous journalism awards in recognition of his impactful work.

He is currently writing a book about his experiences as a journalist in Nigeria, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at the country’s most defining moments.
